The 2026 cars are set to be smaller, nimbler and more environmentally friendly compared to current models.

The world of Formula 1 has introduced the new vocabulary that will be used to reference the technical complexities of its revolutionary 2026 rulebook.

The racing series is embarking on what is arguably the largest technical shift in its long history for the 2026 campaign, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the compulsory introduction of fully sustainable fuels.

The revised engines, which maintain the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a significantly increased electrical capacity, necessitating significant developments in the cars' aerodynamics.

Throughout races, pilots will carefully oversee electrical energy – sometimes even hot laps – to extract the optimal lap time.

Extensive fan consultation were carried out with a diverse audience, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to determine which phrases would make things clearer of the main elements of the new regulations.

The primary aim was to render a series of complex features of the racing as easy to grasp as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, older technical labels for certain devices – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the adjustable aero – have been phased out in favour of descriptive names that directly explain the primary purpose of the technology.

What's the New Technology?

Regulators explain that competitors will have greater control to choose strategies regarding power usage, regeneration, and efficiency.

The upcoming changes mandate a range of settings that will be visually displayed on broadcast screens to aid the viewers' comprehension of the on-track action.

  • Overtake Mode: This replaces the present overtaking aid. It provides a surge of additional ERS power accessible when a driver is close behind the car ahead to execute an overtake.
  • Boost Mode: This is a on-demand power boost from the energy recovery system that can be deployed for overtaking or defending. It delivers the driver maximum power at the push of a button.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be used with calculation, as the available electrical charge is restricted.

  • Adjustable Aero: Both the car's wings adjust their angles – spreading on the straights for minimal air resistance and top speed, and closing in the corners for maximum downforce.
  • Energy Harvesting: The system can recharge the energy store with energy harvested under braking, or during partial power application at the straight's end or in sections where only reduced throttle is used.

2026 Car Specifications

The vehicles for the new era will be smaller and lighter than this year, with a car length shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight reduced by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is projected to decrease by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although constructors will naturally regain performance as they optimize their packages.

Aerodynamic drag has been slashed by 40%. The vehicles will utilize active aerodynamics – front and rear wings will move on the straights to reduce drag and enhance velocity and return into place for maximum cornering performance.

Wheels will retain 18-inch wheel rims, but the tyres themselves will be reduced in width, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and three centimetres on the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The 2026 engines will have an near-equal balance in horsepower generated by the ICE and the battery and motor, a rise from about 20% battery contribution under present rules.

The ERS setup is streamlined through the elimination of the MGU-H, the complicated and costly unit that generated electricity from the turbocharger.

All vehicles will be mandated to operate on carbon-neutral fuel, manufactured from organic sources or synthetic production methods.
