Arsenal's Manager Concedes Extended Tenure Is Tied to Winning Major Honors.

Ahead of marking his six-year milestone in charge, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his future at Arsenal is directly connected to delivering trophies.

The Journey So Far: From Appointment to Present

The Spanish coach assumed control on December 20th, 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup triumph not long after. Yet, that first major trophy remains his only top-tier trophy since succeeding Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” Arteta responded when questioned about remaining in charge after his current deal. “But it’s about today. And numerous factors need to fall into place in the near future as well to earn the right.”

He will mark the anniversary with a match versus Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal played just after his hiring was confirmed.

The Current Landscape

Given that second-placed Manchester City taking on West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal face being knocked off top spot in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This comes notwithstanding Arteta overseeing a squad that has endured over 100 injuries since the start of last season.

The manager is under a contract with 18 months remaining on the extension he agreed to in 2024, yet understands fully that success is required in the immediate future.

Earning the Right

He went on to explain, highlighting the ongoing need to prove his worth. “I think a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you communicate, how you step into the dressing room, the signal you send.”

Arteta continued, commending the unwavering support from the club's ownership, but pinpointing the squad's dedication as most crucial. “In the final analysis, the critical component are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, hunger for knowledge and give their all to the team.”

Arsenal approaches the upcoming game managing an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a muscle problem that is likely to see him miss action for a few weeks.

A Different Club

Despite the fitness woes and the high-stakes environment, Arteta feels the club's “objectives and communication” are profoundly distinct from when he began his reign.

Arteta highlighted the team's performances as evidence of progress. “Examine the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the level we are at.”

He finished by saying, “This is a standard that the Premier League has not witnessed in the past. And we want to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
