As Beachgoers Ran From Violence, Widely-Shared Image Depicts Lifeguard Dashing ‘Full Speed’ Towards the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, views the iconic shoreline as her personal space. On a recent weekend night, she, along with numerous neighbors, detected cracking sounds ringing out across the community.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was too light and there was nothing visible,” she explains. She left her home, she witnessed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw told her trouble had occurred.

While standing on the road, speaking to a duo who had run up the hill still dripping wet, she heard someone coming up from behind. This turned out to be a rescuer, running at full speed to Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was the only one heading in the direction that everyone was trying to flee, carrying that large equipment and barefoot … He’s running towards something that undoubtedly every instinct would instruct you to run in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally maximum effort racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage In the Wake of Tragedy

The image Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous moments of valour in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid surf lifesavers, police and medical teams treating dozens of the injured.

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many professional beach safety officers, remarked that the staff acted heroically from the moment the shooting commenced right into late that nighttime.

“There have been so many emotional narratives, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is incredible,” commented a council representative.
