Both Deceased Students Named in the Providence Campus Incident as Police Press On With Search for Killer.

Two students who lost their lives in Saturday’s violent attack at Brown University were honored at the start of the week – amid a widespread hunt for their assailant carried on following the freeing by local law enforcement of the only individual of interest in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, according to the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a service on Sunday.

She served as the vice-presidency of Brown’s branch of College Republicans of America, as the club stated. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also expressed words of sorrow publicly, stating: “Words cannot express. Thinking of her loved ones and companions, particularly her mother and father.”

An International Student

The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, an Uzbek national in his freshman year at the prestigious university, according to relatives.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a memorial statement.

What Happened

An additional nine individuals were wounded in the weekend shooting in the engineering building of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Officials stated on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man detained in a search at a Hampton Inn about approximately 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was released from custody.

“A perpetrator remains free,” said Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you need to change course and pursue a different angle, and this is precisely what occurred over the last approximately one day.”

Community Anxiety

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our public”.

The assailant began shooting inside a classroom in the engineering building on Saturday, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm handgun, a law enforcement official reported to the Associated Press.

Officers that entered the hotel found two firearms and two loaded 30-round magazines when the person of interest was arrested, as was reported.

Those Hurt

Of the nine hurt, a single scholar was discharged from care, stated Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in serious yet stable state, and another was critically ill, officials reported on Sunday.

A private school, a private academy in Durham, North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

More Condolences

Cook was remembered at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only here growing up... but at Brown University she was a radiant presence in that specific location as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the club. “Ella was known for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she worked for her branch and fellow classmates,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by Umurzokov’s death in a tribute. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to the Umurzokov family, companions, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his promising future.”

The weekend's murders at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US university with about thousands of bachelor's and postgraduate students, took place amid one of at least 392 shooting incidents documented across the United States so far in the current year, according to data. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
