A fundraising initiative is aiming to send a traditional song from Palestine to the Christmas number one spot. The project aims to send support to people in Gaza while also showcasing Palestinian cultural expression.
Musician and artist Brian Eno, who performs on the track, stated that the single 'Lullaby' represents a opportunity to stand with Palestinians this festive season. He noted the potential for an surprise number one.
“That would be amazing if that came to pass, yes,” he stated. “I’m not gonna be completely disheartened if it doesn't manage to, festive releases are a unique phenomenon.”
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who sings on the adaptation of a folk song called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the song's resilient spirit.
“It occupies a deeply meaningful spot for many individuals,” Barghouti shared. “The message is that I would rather die in dignity than exist without freedom. That’s the main theme of the song; we seek to lead a respectful existence that we merit as a people.”
The single was laid down after a solidarity show held in the autumn. Originally intended to be captured during the live event, the performance was shelved during the concert due to time constraints.
The impressive roster of musicians contributing to Lullaby encompasses a group of prominent voices from the industry. All were part of the earlier concert, which successfully generated a significant sum for relief efforts.
Lullaby was brought to life by a group of producers and composers. The song features a mix of the traditional Arabic lyrics with contemporary English verses.
The organizers behind the initiative have clarified that their aim is to collect the highest amount for a charitable pot. These resources will be distributed to initiatives supporting Palestinians through an established charity.
“There is no a specific target,” a spokesperson explained. “We’ll go for as much as possible. Of course, the more the merrier. Every penny goes out to the people of Gaza.”
The context in the territory was described as its profound destruction, with a overwhelming percentage of buildings reportedly in ruins or severely impacted.
“Given that reality, a handful of millions is unlikely to make that much difference. But I think what truly matters is above all raising awareness for this issue and proving the human dimension of the story.”
The single 'Lullaby' is scheduled for release at the end of the week. Additionally, a full recording of the solidarity show will be made accessible to view on a popular streaming site from later in the month.
