US automobile safety regulators have opened an probe into Tesla vehicles equipped with the full self-driving technology due to safety regulation breaches after multiple accidents.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated that the electric carmaker's self-driving assistance system, which demands drivers to stay alert and intervene if needed, had caused car behavior that breached traffic safety lawsâ.
This initial assessment by the NHTSA marks the initial phase before possibly requesting a recall of the vehicles if the agency determines they pose a risk to road safety.
The regulatory body reported it had documented reports of nearly 3 million Tesla vehicles running red traffic lights and traveling in the incorrect way during lane changes while using the system.
NHTSA confirmed it has six documented cases in which a Tesla car, operating with FSD engaged, âapproached an junction with a red light, continued to drive into the crossroads against the red signal and was later part of a collision with other cars in the junctionâ.
The agency noted that four crashes had resulted in injuries to occupants.
The NHTSA announced it has identified 18 complaints and one media report alleging that Tesla vehicles, driving through an junction with FSD engaged, did not stay stationary for the entire time of a red traffic signal, did not come to complete stop, or did not properly recognize and display the proper light status in the car's displayâ.
Several reporters also claimed that FSD âdid not provide warnings of the technology's planned behaviour as the vehicle was coming to a red lightâ.
The full self-driving system, which is more advanced than its Autopilot system, has been being examined by NHTSA for twelve months.
In October 2024, the agency started an investigation into over two million Tesla cars equipped with FSD after four reported collisions in conditions of reduced visibility, such as sun glare, fog or airborne dust. One of these collisions, in last year, was deadly.
Tesla's website states that FSD is âintended for operation by a fully attentive driver, who has their hands on the wheel and is prepared to take over at any time. While these capabilities are designed to become more capable, the presently active functions do not render the car self-driving.â
Automated vehicle technology continue to face increased scrutiny from regulatory bodies as the technology advances and practical implementation reveals possible issues with current implementations.
